Description
Description: Chinese snuff bottle of clear quartz (also called by some as rock crystal), of compressed oval form, the outside carved as if to simulate a woven wicker basket. It is representing the old practice of protecting large jars with a straw lined wicker basket, as here in the Mediterranean area was common for demijohns used for transporting wine.
Mark: No marks
Foot/base: Concave base, no foot.
Dating: 18th / 19th Century
Material: Clear quartz
Size: 62 mm high
Stopper: Green glass imitating jade stopper with red collar and bone spoon
Provenance: Antiquarian market.
References: Basket weave bottles can be found in the catalogs of the bigger auction houses related to good collections. Those made of jade are more common than the quartz ones, as explained in the Notes here below.
Notes: As said in the Notes of our snuff bottle of the same type S62, snuff bottles of this type are found in various materials (we have one in amber, see the O15 bottle in the organic bottles section). Among the stone ones, those made of quartz are less common than the jade ones, despite being jade a more precious material. This is because quartz, due to its crystal nature, is highly prone to crack especially in case of an elaborate carving on a thin wall.
