R22 A “Qilin bringing auspice for sons” jar, Daoguang

SKU: R22 Category:

Description

Description:   Chinese porcelain jar decorated in polychrome, famille rose palette with a joyful scene of a lady riding a qilin and bringing a child, surrounded by boys. This is a popular motif often found on the ware of Daoguang and Tongzhi periods, and it is a marriage auspice for having sons. The motif is popular and often seen on small items like cosmetic boxes. This is no doubt the finest example that we have seen. In particular the faces of the figures are exceptional for this type of ware. Because of that, we tend to think that a correct date attribution should be more properly Daoguang then Tongzhi.

Dating:  Daoguang period.

Size:  18.5 cm high

Provenance:  Antiquarian market. Ex Ascanio Erbaggio collection. The jar carries the sticker A. Erbaggio collection. Pieces from this collection appear once in a while, and we have another one in our collection, the small Langyao vase K3 of the Monochromes section. The last picture shows a letter where we can see that Ascanio Erbaggio had an Import – Export Company, active in the fifties, based in Rome and trading with the Far East.
