Description: Japanese red, brown, white and black lacquered ivory snuff bottle, decorated with a Kwannon seated on a rock emerging from troubled waters on one side, and a Kwannon with a boy walking over clouds on the other side.
Foot/base: Protruded squared foot, recessed flat base
Mark: Incised, red filled Qianlong mark
Dating: 19th Century

Stopper: Lacquered ivory with ivory spoon.

The construction of this bottle is quite complex. The ivory body is cylindrical, with added hardwood “wings”. This has been possible to see thanks to the fact that the lacquer is partially flaked off on the wood areas. Without the flaking, it would not have been possible to see this detail, because the junction between the two materials is perfectly smooth.
