Description
Description: Chinese Kangxi plate of the highest quality, thin potting, molded cavetto, bracket-lobed rim and very finely decorated with peonies in the best brighter dark blue tone. The reverse with a rare mark of the Kangxi period. The mark is “xin yi tang” – “Hall for retiring the mind” on Davison book, where it is in the four characters section (#1335) having also the character “Made for”. The translation is open for argument. The first character is “xin” meaning mind, the second character “yi” in this sense meaning ease or leisure, so the four characters may be translated as “Made for the Hall to Ease the Mind”.
Dating: 18th century, Kangxi period, Qing dynasty.
Size: 26.6 cm diameter
Provenance: Antiquarian market

Notes: This plate is broken and it has an old stapled restoration. The restoration too is remarkable. The holes for the staples are not going through the porcelain, despite the very thin thickness, and they have been painted in white or blue according to the background.
